Oral Care While Pregnant

Posted .

If you’re pregnant, it’s very important to take good care of your smile. This is because pregnancy can harm the teeth and gums in more ways than you might realize. In fact, it can cause eroded tooth enamel, brittle teeth, and a major problem called pregnancy gingivitis. So, make sure to keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape throughout the 9 months of your pregnancy. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Bradley Austin, has some tips for you.

First, give your teeth and gums special attention. This means you need to brush every morning and night, floss once a day, and rinse daily. You also need to visit our office every six months for your dental cleaning and exam. These things can help you reduce the chances of having dental problems during pregnancy. As you clean your smile, make sure to use fluoride toothpaste, a soft-bristled toothbrush, and dental floss. As you visit our office, make sure to mention you are pregnant.

Second, take very good care of your teeth if you have morning sickness. This is important because the acid in the vomit can severely erode the teeth, making them vulnerable to dental issues like tooth decay. So, after your trip to the bathroom, make sure to rinse your mouth with water and wait 30 minutes to brush.
